Historic Preservation Corps (HPC)

The Historic Preservation Corps (HPC) provides employment opportunities for local young adults in a crew-based format. The HPC crew completes priority historic preservation projects within Routt County. The program was developed collaboratively with Historic Routt County in 2010. Participants earn a modest wage and are eligible to earn an AmeriCorps education award for education expenses. In the summers of 2010 and 2011 HPC crews conducted work on the iconic  More Barn and adjacent Yock Homestead cabin in downtown Steamboat Springs. The projects entailed re-chinking the More Barn, stabilizing the adjacent machine shop, disassembling and documenting the adjacent homestead cabin, reconstructing the homestead cabin utilizing much of the old timber and beetle kill timber, and improving the surrounding site that was established as a new City of Steamboat Springs park.

The Historic Preservation Crew members train and work under the supervision of a HPC crew leader and a local contractor, learning valuable construction and historic preservation techniques while completing priority projects. The crew participates in the program during the summer season and have opportunities to transition to the conservation corps program for additional employment opportunities through RMYC.
