Community Youth Corps Assistant Crew Leader

  • OVERVIEW:
    The Community Youth Corps (CYC) program operates as a cooperative agreement between Rocky Mountain Youth Corps and the City of Steamboat Springs. The Community Youth Corps Assistant Crew Leader will coordinate all components of the Community Youth Corps programs of the City of Steamboat Springs. The Assistant Crew Leader will manage and supervise CYC projects, and Corpsmembers. The Assistant Crew Leader is responsible for the education, training and development of crews of 14-16 year olds on 5 two-week sessions. Each two-week session will include one week of town-based projects and one week of field-based projects. Additional responsibilities include those expected of any corpsmember including trail work, meal preparation, cleanup/setup and other day-to-day corpsmember duties. This position is designed with leadership training in order to assist the Assistant Crew Leader with future development in the field of education and conservation and to provide opportunities for direct service. The Assistant Crew Leader must meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements and will receive an AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of the program.

    GENERAL PURPOSE:
    Assists the City of Steamboat Springs CYC Director and CYC Field Supervisor as requested in the overall operation of the Community Youth Corps program to include: supervising and giving direction to crew members and leading crews of 14-16 year olds on projects such as landscaping and trail work, and will include some camping and youth education. The position requires physical strength, experience working with teenagers, and outdoor leadership qualities. These operations include but are not limited to administrative, managerial and supervisory responsibilities-while leading and coordinating both technical and non-technical projects.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
    The Assistant Crew Leader works under the general supervision of the CYC Director and CYC Field Supervisor (City of Steamboat Springs), and the RMYC Program Director (Rocky Mountain Youth Corps).

    SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
    The Assistant Crew Leader exercises supervision over the CYC Corpsmembers and any volunteers associated with projects.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    These duties and responsibilities are to be performed in cooperation with the CYC Director and CYC Field Supervisor. They are subject to change according to the changing demands of the service community and the governing body. The required duties and responsibilities are not limited to those listed here.

    General:
    • Supervising and giving direction to Corpsmembers

    • Assisting and supporting CYC staff with management and/or instruction of Corpsmembers.

    • Lead CYC crews on technical trail and conservation projects including daily supervision, adherence to rules and regulations, monitoring safety and providing training when necessary.

    • Perform duties expected of any CYC Corpsmember including trail work, meal preparation, cleanup/setup, and other day-to-day crewmember duties.

    • Plan, organize and facilitate daily environmental education programs for assigned CYC (crew assignments may change without notice).

    • Direct discussions, activities, games or other education-based programming for assigned crew.

    • Organize lessons that meet the diverse needs of assigned crew.

    • Follow and critique curricula as developed by and for the Community Youth Corps and Rocky Mountain Youth Corps.

    • Report regularly to the CYC Field Supervisor concerning educational or staff issues.

    • Participate in field training.

    • Complete Life After AmeriCorps assignments and activities.

    • Support CYC staff and project sponsors as necessary during project sessions.

    • Adherence to rules and regulations as specified in the RMYC Corpsmember Handbook, the AmeriCorps Handbook and the City of Steamboat Springs CYC Crew Leader Handbook.

    • Perform related duties as required.
    Administrative:
    • Maintain programming operations and regulations of the City of Steamboat Springs.

    • Assist with the inventory of equipment, food and supplies.

    • Record and monitor personnel hours.

    • Maintain reports on youth education and program evaluation.

    • Perform regular staff evaluations on the Corpsmembers as necessary.

    • Report regularly to the CYC Director, CYC Field Supervisor and RMYC Program Director concerning staff or personnel issues.

    • Establish and maintain regular, open and active relationships with CYC project Agencies including but not limited to City of Steamboat Springs Parks and Recreation Department., RMYC, the BLM, the Botanic Park, Perry Mansfield, State Parks, and local US Forest Service Ranger Districts.

    • Respond to public inquiries about job training and recreation programs by telephone, public meetings, mailings, or presentations.

    • Perform related duties as required.
    Technical:
    • Have a basic knowledge of landscaping; trail building, fence building, painting, general maintenance, etc.

    • Maintain the physical quality, cleanliness, and safety of the CYC and RMYC facility, tools, equipment, and vehicles.

    CONSERVATION PROJECTS:
    CYC Assistant Crew Leaders will be expected to participate fully in all conservation and education projects. On-site training will be provided when necessary. Projects may be located at high elevations for extended periods of time in a remote setting with limited contact with support staff or in a front country setting in close proximity to roads and buildings. The types of projects performed by each crew vary with crew schedule and location. Project types may include: trail maintenance, trail construction, fence construction, noxious weed eradication, habitat rehabilitation, park clean-up, fuels reduction and other conservation projects. All participants should expect 8-10 hour workdays filled with extremely physically demanding projects. In the course of an average workday, participants will be utilizing hand tools to: move rocks, soil or brush; remove stumps or trees; create permanent trail structures; and completing other conservation related activities. In general, projects involve extended standing, stooping or bending at the waist to accomplish tasks. Conservation projects will be physically exhausting. Crews are in the public eye at all times and will be expected to demonstrate appropriate safety, project and youth corps behavior. Uniforms are required while on conservation projects.

    WEEKEND ACTIVITIES:
    CYC Crew Leaders, Assistant Crew Leaders and CYC Corpsmembers return to their homes during the weekends.

    LIVING/CAMPING:
    During town-based weeks, Crew Leaders, Assistant Crew Leaders, and Corpsmembers return to their own houses each evening after each day. During field-based weeks, CYC crews camp at or near their assigned vehicle (15 passenger van), although some circumstances may require extensive backpacking or long distance hiking. Participants sleep in tents in either backcountry or front country settings. An outdoor kitchen with propane stove, coolers and food boxes are provided as shelter for meals and storage for food. Special dietary requirements are difficult to meet and must be disclosed by the corpsmember prior to arrival. Vegetarian options are generally provided at each meal if participants communicate their needs. Bathroom facilities range from campground pit toilets to latrines following Leave No Trace guidelines. CYC crews are functioning communities. Each participant is expected to complete tasks that benefit the entire crew. Assigned duties may include meal preparation and clean up, kitchen clean-up, camp set-up/break-down, tool maintenance, vehicle inspection, and other communal duties as required.

    TRAVEL:
    CYC crews travel frequently throughout each week. Crews may utilize 15 passenger vans to meet their travel needs. Personal vehicles must be stored at CYC headquarters. Travel time may also include travel to and from recreational sites. CYC certified drivers are solely responsible for vehicle operation.

    EDUCATION:
    The Seed curriculum provides crews with opportunities for discussion, activities, games and journaling on a variety of topics. Crews generally spend about 5-7 hours a week in Seed session (1-2 hours daily). Sessions are to be facilitated by the Crew Leader and Assistant Crew Leader. Seed is designed to provide Corpsmembers with opportunities for personal growth, increased understanding of environmental issues, introduction to key job skills, and other types of training. RMYC and CYC value the Seed program as an integral part of its programs. Corpsmembers are expected to participate fully in all aspects of the Seed program.

    REGULATIONS:
    RMYC and CYC believe in healthy lifestyles modeling. Therefore the possession or use of alcohol, drugs or tobacco is strictly prohibited. Other non-negotiable rules include possession of weapons, violent behavior, sexual harassment, unauthorized leave and theft. The RMYC General Manual will be provided upon enrollment.

    ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
    The Assistant Crew Leader will perform the duties of this position in several different settings including desert, mountain and alpine environments of Colorado. The position requires extensive bending, lifting, pushing, stooping, carrying and other heavy physical labor for extended periods of time. The Assistant Crew Leader will be exposed to stressful and physically and mentally demanding situations such as severe weather and a variety of trail conditions. The Assistant Crew Leader may be required to carry a daypack with personal essentials for extended periods of time or long distances. The Assistant Crew Leader may be required to carry hand tools and equipment for extended periods of time or long distances. The nature of our project environment requires that Corpsmembers utilize appropriate safety equipment such as leather gloves, hardhat, long pants and protective glasses.

    MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT:
    The incumbent is responsible for their work and personal clothes, leather boots, work gloves, and personal camping equipment. Group food, group camping gear and other supplies will be provided by RMYC and CYC. A complete Equipment List will be provided upon enrollment.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
    Corps members should lead physically active lives prior to becoming a member of their crew. Training in trail construction, camping, cooking and other technical skills will be provided as necessary. Corps members should be accustomed to physical labor and/or cardiovascular activity for sustained periods of time.

    DESIRED MINIUMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Meet AmeriCorps eligibility requirements.
    • Experience with national or community service.
    • Minimum: High School diploma or GED.
    • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree or pursuing BA in natural resources, education or related field.
    • Age: 21-25 years old.
    • Experience working with people ages 14-16 years.
    • Clean criminal background check.
    • Clean driving record
    • Strong leadership skills
    • Strong organizational skills.
    • Ability to work independently.
    • Self-motivated and confident.
    • Ability to clearly and effectively communicate written and orally.
    • Meet physical and work environment demands of the position.
    • Some technical skills including trail work, construction, knowledge of associated tools.

    AmeriCorps ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:
    Upon successfully completing their terms of service, Community Youth Corps Assistant Crew Leaders will be eligible to receive an Education Award of (depending on term of service). Education Awards can be used to pay back qualified student loans and to pay for the cost of attending a qualified institution of higher education or the expenses incurred in participation in an approved school-to-work program (not all schools are eligible). Minimum requirements are as follows:

    • 17-25 years old.
    • United States Citizen, United States National or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the United States.
    • High School Diploma/GED or agreement to work towards a diploma or GED while in the Program.
    • Intent to serve for the duration of the Program.
