Yampa Valley Science School Intern

CRITERIA:
Senior Leaders (SL) must be at least 18 years old.
Recommended knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Knowledge and/or interest in environmental education, ecology, natural sciences
  • Experience working with middle and high school students (preferred)
  • First Aid/CPR (preferred)

TIME COMMITMENT:
YVSS operates during the month of September. SLs will need to begin on the Sunday prior their assigned YVSS session (about 5 hours of training will be scheduled). The SLs will also be required to attend the full Science School session, from Sunda through Friday. The SLs may be requested to spend one post-session day on school clean-up and program evaluations.

BENEFITS:
Senior Leaders will receive on site training and experience with Middle School and High School students. They will gain knowledge in the ecology of the Yampa Valley. SLs will gain valuable experience in classroom planning, trip management and academic assessment. Of course, SLs will receive free food and lodging during the YVSS session.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assist in the facilitation of curriculum activities.

  2. Assist in the supervision of recreational and group activities.

  3. Train and supervise Junior Leaders.

  4. Oversee all operations of the school under the direction of the Program Managers, including but not limited to: overseeing the facilitating of the environmental science activities; overseeing the recreational and group interaction activities; overseeing the cabin groups in the evenings; assist in the implementation of Junior Leader Only activities.

  5. Assist the Program Managers with school clean-up, program evaluations and Public Presentations as needed.

  6. Agree to be named, photographed and video-taped as a participant for media and public presentation purposes.

  7. Participate and supervise Friday Community Service Project.
