About SLI and RMYC

The Service Learning Institute is a community service program which enhances the sense of belonging and connectedness of youth to their communities through education and meaningful service projects. Youth receive education about citizenship, volunteerism, and self-development while completing projects. The program is sponsored by the Routt County Youth Services Coalition and managed by Rocky Mountain Youth Corps. RMYC provides youth with comprehensive services to help them develop job skills, work ethic, environmental awareness, educational success and healthy lifestyles. Through experiential work experience, service to the community, and educational opportunities, RMYC helps youth develop the skills they need to succeed in the classroom, the home, the workforce and everyday life.

Position Description:

The Summer VISTA Mentors would provide support to the volunteer participants, provide group leadership, and collaboration on the coordination of projects.  The advanced job and life skills acquired by the individuals during the summer will enable them to have a competitive advantage in the workforce thereby helping them overcome high unemployment rates and give them the tools to start to move out of poverty. The impoverished community will benefit as a whole by engaging young adults in meaningful, productive community service projects. These youth would otherwise be idle and more inclined to burden rather than bolster the local economy and its social and legal services. In coordination with the Crew Leaders, Mentors will plan and facilitate the educational sessions which will consist of a job and life skill enhancing curriculum.
