WHAT WE DO
RMYC helps youth and young adults make a difference in themselves and their community through meaningful service opportunities, educational experiences, and group recreational activities. RMYC strives to meet the needs of the communities of northwest Colorado by offering healthy life skills opportunities for middle school students, summer conservation corps participants, and Yampa Valley Science School students. RMYC is one of over 100 member corps of the National Association of Service and Conservation Corps, and is one of ten accredited youth corps of the Colorado Youth Corps Association.
RMYC GOALS
- Provide life skills training through a healthy lifestyles model.
- Offer opportunities for academic success in youth/young adults.
- Provide enhanced employment opportunities through job skills development.
- Engage young adults in meaningful conservation projects.
- Forge partnerships with land management agencies, local community services, and non-profit organizations.
- Promote a sense of belonging to communities and environments.
- Employ a diverse mix of ethnic, economic, and social backgrounds to reflect our service community.
Conservation Corps
Over 100 young people ages 16-25 yrs old are served each year through residential, environmental conservation projects and education. Crews work on projects ranging from building and maintenance of trails, bridges, and fences to river flood control, fire fuels mitigation and general maintenance of campgrounds and parks.
CREW TYPES
Regional Conservation Crew (RCC):
The RCC consists of 16-19 year old participants who have an interest in working in the outdoors for four weeks of the summer. These young people are recruited from the communities in which the project lie. Oftentimes, these youth come with prior experience in camping and working outdoors, but the major factor is their determination and enthusiasm.
Leadership Development Crew (LDC):
LDC is comprised of 18-25 year old participants who are considering a career in environmental education or related field. These young adults are recruited from throughout the country, with preference given to those residing in the project communities. They come to RMYC with more experience than the RCC youth, and are able to work at more specialized projects, such as those requiring technical skills, chainsaws, or working at high elevations for extended time periods. Many times, these young adults remain in the community they have been working in and pursue jobs through other project agencies beyond their service with RMYC. Examples of other LDC crews have included the Continental Divide Trail Crew, the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative Crew and this year we will add the Katrina Disaster Relief Crew.
Yampa Valley Science School
In 2000, RMYC developed an experiential environmental education program entitled the "Yampa Valley Science School" in cooperation with several school districts and common interest agencies. The school serves Routt County sixth-graders and incorporate a five-day educational curriculum, culminating with a conservation service project. The goals of the school are:
- to provide place-based environmental education through experiential and interactive lesson activities;
- to link the communities throughout the Yampa Valley;
- to provide intergenerational links and mentoring opportunities for sixth graders, high school students, college students, and community adults; and
- to foster and encourage integrated academic education with the public school systems.
