YOUTH (14-18)
CONSERVATION CORPS

What to Expect...

RMYC can be an empowering and life-changing experience that presents you with the opportunity to be apart of a part of a one-of-a-kind community focused on teamwork, growth, making connections, and learning new skills. Living and working on a crew is totally immersive and, without a doubt, challenging. The relationships and skills you build, in addition to the work you can accomplish, will make it all worth it. Many people who come to RMYC have little to no experience in this type of setting, and that's okay. We all start somewhere! This is a place to learn and challenge yourself. We only ask you to have a passion for the outdoors, an adaptable mindset, and the ability to push out of your comfort zone! Youth Conservation Crews run two and four-week sessions. These crews will comprise youth ages 14-18 who will complete 32 hours of project work. On your recreation weekends, you re-supply groceries, shower, relax, and adventure!

Gear List

A few things to keep in mind when choosing gear. . .

Will you use this gear in the future for personal recreation? This may inform how much to invest in certain items.

RMYC will provide you with two work shirts, and the personal protective equipment you will need.

The Golden Rule: Any article of clothing you depend on for warmth must NOT BE COTTON. When wet from rain or sweat cotton does not insulate the heat your body produces. Synthetic and wool materials are ideal.

The company’s return policy. More expensive brands often have better repair, exchange, or return policies.

RMYC will lend out tents, sleeping bags, and sleeping pads for those who need them.

There is a definite trade-off between price and quality. The work we do is hard on our gear – it usually pays to spend a little bit more to get something higher quality. It will last longer, and you’ll be more comfortable.

Boots (required)

You will need leather boots, preferably of medium weight and stiffness with a traction sole, firm toes (steel toe is not required or recommended), and medium height (with standard ankle support). They should also be waterproof (i.e. Gortex, etc).

If you are on a chainsaw crew, your boots need to be fully leather and preferably 6-8 inches tall.

Lightweight fabric hiking boots do not provide adequate foot protection and are not preferred.

Start breaking them in before you arrive! Seriously, if there is one thing you do to prepare for the season, it should be breaking in your boots! Your feet will thank you.

Some Brand Examples: Asolo, Danner, Scarpa, Lowa, Vasque, Merrell
