Garett Every: Recreation Forestry Technician, Parks Ranger District, Walden, CO

Intern Profile: Garrett Every

RMYC’s internship program engages youth and young adults in valuable work experiences within natural resources management agencies and non-profits, facilitating advanced careers and education in natural resources. Interns work under the daily supervision of the hosting public lands management agency or non-profit, with partners including the US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, Colorado Youth Corps Association, and more. Below, we catch up with Garrett Every, a recreation forestry technician for RMYC now in his second year in the program.

Background: I was born outside of Memphis, Tennessee, and raised outside of Richmond, Virginia. I attended Virginia Commonwealth University where I majored in Environmental Studies and minored in Statistics.

What’d you do during other college summers?

During my summers in college, I started working for a local summer camp where I led high adventure programs. I also did an internship with local, county government in water quality.

How did you hear about the RMYC Internship program?

I heard about the RMYC internship through a conservation job board. It was an opportunity that was different from anything I had done before, and I had always wanted to visit the Rockies. I ended up selecting the program because I wanted to do public service while utilizing my education and physical skills.

How’d the season go and what all did you learn?

The intern season went very well. I learned hard skills like running a chainsaw, surveying techniques, ATV operations and maintenance, and many more while also learning soft skills in a team environment. I gained knowledge about what goes into conservation measures and about the overall environment in the Rockies.

How did it help prepare you for your current position?

I am still an intern through RYMC, with a different department this time. But it’s still awesome. And I feel as if it has opened some doors for career paths in the future as I’d love to pursue some sort of continued public service work.

Any advice for other RMYC interns?

Be prepared to work hard and keep an open mind.
