Tools of the Trade
After my first working week with RMYC in the BLM’s Colorado River Valley Field Office, I’ve grown intimate with the ragtag supply of tools in our arsenal. Below is a brief description of how I feel using each one.
Silky: I’m a bedraggled warrior locked in battle with my foe. The formidable tree (small bush) is putting up a strong fight, but I’m slowly wearing it down. My back hurts, but not as much as that of my enemy. The sweet taste of triumph is ever nearer.
Road hoe: I’m doing the job and I’m doing it well—but where is the passion? The creativity? I’m just a little bored and uninspired. Quietly yearning for something more.
Pick mattock: Strength and power. Below me, earth crumbles before my feet. Above me, only God.
Rock bar: Weak little baby. Scared and confused. Everything is heavy and nothing is working right. I have not managed to move a single rock with this thing.
Lopper: Tooooo easy. I’m a strong and brutal dictator, my dissidents puny and weak. Doth that sage branch dare grow across the BLM’s specially designated campsite? Then I will snip it, with but a simple stroke of my hand.
McCloud: Humble and modest. Wearing overalls, stomping around in cowboy boots, holding a stalk of grass between my teeth. This work ain’t much, but it’s mine.
Pulaski: I’m like a firefighter! A beacon of my community! Performing a lighthearted show of strength for my many admirers. Selflessly protecting public lands from dastardly roots and vines. Go me!
Grubber: Grubbing. Haha, what a funny word.
