Trey Dockery

Trey Dockery: Recreation (OHV) crew, BLM office, Meeker, CO

Trey Dockery grew up in Austin, Texas, where he attended college at Austin Community College, before moving

to Colorado in May 2024 to work as an intern for RMYC in the BLM’s field office in Meeker. He like it so much that he’s returning again for season number two as an OHV Ranger intern. We caught up with him for how he likes it, what skills he’s learning, and more.

Current title: Recreation (OHV) crew, BLM office, Meeker, CO

How did you find out about the RMYC internship program?

While researching job opportunities that would take me out-of-state.

What did you do during your other college summers?

I spent my other college summers working jobs that involved being outside. I took some road trips to western Colorado and the eastern US to places like Louisiana, Mississippi, and Arkansas. Anything to get a taste of the outdoor elements and work within it.

How did last year’s intern season go and what all did you learn?

It went amazing! I learned so many things about the function of public lands and the ways in which, me, as an OHV Ranger Intern, protects the trails and cleans the environment. The work helped me establishe connections with the local community and create a beneficial network. It also taught me a lot of personal skills like time management, communication, and self-discipline. I also learned important navigational skills like GIS, using a compass, and handling emergency situations.

How did the internship help prepare you for your current position? It really excites me for more seasonal work. Last year was my first run-about, so I’m realizing just how amazing the leap was, what all I got out of it, and what led to it. It really opened my eyes to the possibilities of work and adventure being symbiotic.

Any advice for other RMYC interns?

Take the leap!

Any plans for the future?

This year I’ll be working  on another season with the BLM in Meeker because I loved the people, the environment, and the purpose of the work.
